How Hypnosis Actually Works
Most of what people think they know about hypnosis comes from stage shows and movies. Someone snaps their fingers, another person clucks like a chicken, and it looks like the hypnotized person has handed over their free will. That version of hypnosis makes for good entertainment. It has almost nothing to do with hypnotherapy.
In a real session, you are awake and aware the entire time. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention and deep relaxation, closer to the feeling of being absorbed in a good book or a long drive than to sleep. Your mind narrows its focus, and the part of you that filters and second guesses everything quiets down a little. That's the whole trick. Nothing more mysterious than that.
Why does that matter for change? Most of the patterns people want to shift, anxiety spirals, cravings, the urge to avoid something, run automatically. They fire before you've had a chance to think about them. Talking about a pattern engages the thinking part of your mind, which is useful, but it doesn't always reach the automatic part that's actually running the show. Hypnotherapy works at that level, while you stay fully aware and in control of what you accept.
You cannot be made to do anything against your values in hypnosis, and you can open your eyes and stop at any point. If anything, most people are surprised by how ordinary the experience feels. Not dramatic. Just quiet, focused, and useful.
